How Acupuncture Supports IVF and IUI
For many individuals and couples, the journey through fertility treatment is filled with hope, uncertainty, and a lot of patience. Whether you're preparing for in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), acupuncture is proven to be an effective way to support your body throughout the process.
Acupuncture has become an increasingly popular complementary therapy for people undergoing fertility treatments. Many patients choose to include acupuncture as part of a more comprehensive approach to fertility care. From helping manage stress to supporting overall well-being, acupuncture offers benefits that support ALL OF YOU to best prepare you for
conception, pregnancy, birth and post partum.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves placing very thin, sterile needles at specific points on the body to encourage balance and support the body's natural functions.
From a modern medical perspective, research suggests acupuncture influences the nervous system, regulates and balances reproductive hormones and promotes the release of chemicals that help regulate pain, mood, and relaxation. Studies have shown acupuncture increases IUI and IVF success rates. Fertility clinics recognize acupuncture as a complementary option alongside conventional treatment and have been referring to Donna for treatment for over 2 decades!
Supporting Your Body During IVF and IUI
IVF and IUI involve carefully timed medical procedures, medications, and hormone changes. If you have decided to utilize these procedures for conception, acupuncture won’t replace any part of those treatments; it supports the body before, during, and after the process by way of the following results:
Promoting Healthy Blood Flow
Healthy circulation is essential throughout the body, including the reproductive organs. Studies suggest acupuncture improves blood flow to the uterus, supporting a healthy environment for implantation. This is one reason fertility specialists are telling patients to incorporate acupuncture into treatment plans. Donna specializes in fertility support and collaborates with your Endocrinologist to provide you comprehensive care.
Helping Manage Stress
Fertility treatment can be emotionally demanding. Appointments, medications, financial considerations, and the uncertainty of outcomes often create significant stress.
Acupuncture is well known for its calming effects. Patients report feeling deeply relaxed during and after treatment, and studies have found acupuncture reduces stress hormones and improve overall emotional well-being. Feeling calmer can make the fertility experience more manageable.
Supporting Hormonal Balance
Hormones play a central role in fertility treatment. Although fertility medications are responsible for directing much of the process during IVF and IUI, acupuncture helps support the body's natural regulatory systems alongside medical care.
Donna tailors treatments based on where someone is in their cycle or fertility protocol, creating an individualized plan that evolves throughout treatment.
When Should You Start Acupuncture?
Many fertility specialists recommend beginning acupuncture several weeks—or even a few months—before starting IVF or IUI whenever possible, and Donna agrees. This gives the body time to establish a consistent treatment routine before medications and procedures begin.
That said, it's never necessarily "too late." Some people begin acupuncture during an active IVF cycle or around the time of an IUI procedure. Your acupuncturist can coordinate treatment timing with your fertility clinic to complement your medical plan.
What Does the Research Say?
Studies suggest acupuncture improves pregnancy rates in patients undergoing IVF: in one trial it was observed that three sessions of acupuncture before and after embryo transfer nearly doubled the pregnancy rates in women with unexplained infertility. It was also found that acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety levels in women undergoing fertility procedures. Another study compared successful pregnancy rates in three catagories of patients undergoing IVF: one group received no acupuncture, (48.2% success), one received acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer only, (50.8% sucess) and the third group received a series of acupuncture treatments for weeks before and after the embryo transfer, (61.3% success!)
Consistent across the research is acupuncture's ability to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve quality of life during fertility treatment. For many people, those benefits alone make it a valuable addition to their care.
Choosing an Experienced Practitioner
If you're considering acupuncture during IVF or IUI, look for a licensed acupuncturist with experience treating fertility patients. Practitioners like Donna who regularly work alongside reproductive endocrinologists understand the timing of fertility medications, egg retrievals, embryo transfers, and insemination procedures.
Be sure to let both your fertility clinic and acupuncturist know about your treatment schedule so your care can be coordinated safely and effectively.
A Whole-Person Approach to Fertility
Fertility treatment is about more than lab results and medical appointments. Your physical health, emotional well-being, sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress levels all play important roles in how you experience the journey.
Acupuncture fits naturally into this whole-person approach. While it isn't a guarantee of pregnancy, it may help support your body, encourage relaxation, and provide a dedicated space to slow down during what can be an emotionally intense time.
Whether you're preparing for your first IUI or moving forward with IVF, combining evidence-based medical care with supportive therapies like acupuncture can help you feel more engaged, supported, and empowered throughout your fertility journey.
